Vandiperiyar, Idukki Dist, Kerala: In a major stampede, 106 pilgrims returning from Sabarimala Ayyappa temple after having a darshan of Makara Jyothi (divine light) were killed and about 150 injured late Friday night. The stampede was triggered when a jeep going downhill lost control and ploughed through devotees in a narrow forest stretch at Pullumedu in Idukki district of Kerala close to the Tamil Nadu border.

Over 70 bodies have been brought to the government hospital at nearby Kumali town as police and fire force worked overnight with local rescuers at the hilly terrain where the the mishap happened Friday evening. The place where the tragedy took place is in a very remote area where there are no lights.

According to top police sources, 106 people were confirmed dead and seven of the injured were stated to be in serious condition.

Most of the pilgrims killed were from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

A high-level inquiry into the mishap will be ordered, government sources said.

Several ministers and senior officials are camping at the accident site and at Kumali town.

The tragedy took place in Pulumedu, a forested area about 10 km from the Vandiperiyar town, and about 30 km from the Sabarimala temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa in Pathanamthitta district.

One Sri Lankan is among those killed, while 18 are from Tamil Nadu, 12 hail from Karnataka, six from Andhra Pradesh and three belong to Kerala, hospital oficial said.

Most of the bodies and the injured have been brought to the Kumily government hospital.

As the death toll in the stampede mounted to 106, doctors at a government hospital in this Kerala town busied themselves in one of the biggest post-mortem procedures in the state.
