Kashmir Government Decides Not to Allow BJP To Hoist Indian Flag

Srinagar, Jan 20: In a major decision, the Kashmir government has decided not to allow the rightwing BJP to hoist Indian flag in Srinagar on January 26 (Republic Day of India).

BJP leaders had threatened to hoist the Indian flag in historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar on January 26. The pro-independence separatist leader Yasin Malik had threatened that his activists would hoist the party's flag at Lal Chowk in response to BJP's flag hoisting move. The separatist leader has called for the Lal Chowk march on January 26 to foil BJP's move.

An official spokesman said, "In a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, it was decided that no programme which has the potential of vitiating the peaceful atmosphere in the region will be allowed".

"The meeting reviewed the arrangements and directed that while the January 26 (Republic Day) should be celebrated with full fervor and enthusiasm, the elements who are bent upon disturbing the law and order should be dealt with sternly and the directions to this effect should be passed on to the district authorities as well," the spokesman said.

However, the Kashmir chapter of BJP has decided that it will go ahead with its plan to hoist the Indian flag in Kashmir. "Under no circumstances, the flag hoisting ceremony at Lal Chowk would be stopped. It is a national event now and any obstruction raised against it would be pulled down with all might," said party's senior leader Shamsher Singh.

Sources said authorities will deploy additional police and paramilitary soldiers across region to thwart the BJP flag hoisting march. "The BJP activists won't be allowed to enter Kashmir and create law and order problems," they said.
