Life after death for Milk cartons

Jiang Mei Gui or “Ginger Rose Jiang” has taken a liking to the silver interiors of used milk cartons.

She has built an army of supporters around her unlikely cause -- recycling in China.

If you’re imagining Jiang as a tangle-haired woman wearing a cape of milk cartons with mad scientist eyes and hippie shoes, I'd be understandable. But you’re way off.

That’s not her.

A slight woman in her 50s with an energetic smile, Jiang is about as stiff as a steamed bun.

Short and well dressed, Jiang’s high on life with a supernaturally positive attitude. You would think she’s never had a single doubt about anything, including her milk cartons.

Every week, she and her 20-person team of “green housewives” gather, clean and flatten hundreds of discarded drink cartons, then store the waist-high pallets of flattened tetrapacks in Jiang’s home before sewing them a new identity.

She takes us by the hand into her house to show us just how fun a trash-filled home can be.

Stepping into a tiny 12-square-meter living room, we see shelves neatly stacked to the ceiling with hats of all shapes and sizes, aprons, baskets, tote bags, placemats, posters, curtains and raincoats. All of it is made from former drink containers.

“Look at this,” she insists. “Look at how pretty it is. It's hard to image that someone would have just throw the box away in the trash.

“I picked these up from an Air France flight I was on," motioning to another shelf of of re-claimed items. "At first, the attendants are very confused by my request, but once I explained, they accommodated me,” she says laughing.

•“Another flight attendant is bringing me juice cartons this week from a Taiwanese airlines,” she adds, putting the pineapple carton hat on her three-year-old grandson Ling Ting’s head.
He pleads until she exchanges it for his favorite, a milk carton hat with a dancing cartoon of Little Sheep.
