I tried wm6.5 then android and now wp7 on same device HD2. WP7 is fluid in UI. I like it better than iOS.
Problem with android is , on XDA u have hundreds of builds.. Every app has it's own UI. And some apps work on froyo, others do not.. same  goes with Gingerbrd. Is a samsung device works with an app, HTC won't.. go to market on the device and see app reviews.
Free/Cheap is not always better... Windows still leads though linux is free.. same goes with office > open office.
I don't agree "WP7 failed before launch"
Apps? eventually it will catch up.. no OS had a million from the start.

Have you tried anything besides M$?. Android has so many builds because it is easy to customize. Who is stopping you from writing your own UI?. Heck MeeGo has better UI than WP7. Ask any Qualcom or any Employee that works on Processors, the'd happily say that the WinTel era is doomed. If you still want to bask in the Old glory of M$, then by all means you can. I wont stop you. Honestly, apart from Kinect, what other recent M$ product was successful?. Given how much Money M$ has, i'd say that they could easily throw billions of Dollars on anything and come up with Profitable Product. But, as much as MS lovers would want to believe, that never happend. One product in a decade, COME ON!

FYI ...I have my personal Laptop with Win7 Office I use Solaris and Linux for administration, and I own a Android powered device.... #~` #~` #~`

I never tried open office, but i tried meego on my HD2... (it can run)
I tried Ubuntu, Mint etc various builds.... always back to windows 7.
You can argue linux is great... but not user friendly enough for all.. may be only for linux geeks (based on your user name) like you or people who just want to check email/web.
