Harish1 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Hundreds of Indian students of a US university in Silicon Valley have been facing deportation from the country after it was shut down by the authorities last week on charge of immigration fraud. The students, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, were enrolled with Tri-Valley University in Pleasanton, which has been charged by federal investigating authorities with misusing visa permits and money laundering. Reacting to the varsity shutdown by the authorities, External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna said on Thursday that he has sought a report from its missions in the US into media reports of Indian students being affected. "The matter will be taken up with the US. We have instructed our missions that the welfare of the students will have to be looked into. It is strange that students have not approached our consulate yet," Krishna said. According to a federal complaint filed in a California court, the university had helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigrant status. Around 1,555 students were enrolled with the university of which 95 per cent were Indians. Investigation by Immigration and Custom Enforcement found that the students enrolled in various courses had shown false California addresses and were illegally working in various parts of the country. There were unconfirmed reports that the deportation process of some of the students has already started. As per the American rule, once a university shuts down, the students who are issued F-1 visa lose their status within a stipulated time.
