[size=12pt]A day after lifting the stringent curbs on Indian Space Research Organisation and Defence Research and Development Organisation, the United States has begun making a strong pitch for close collaboration with India in defence and space sectors.

“These actions will open important new opportunities for our companies and Governments on cooperating in the defense and space areas,” Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake said. Having completed the government’s part of the work related to the civil nuclear deal, he said the way is now open for American companies to “supply billions of dollars worth of civil nuclear reactors for India’s growing energy market”.

Focusing on the removal of ISRO from the US Department of Commerce’s Entity List, he expected the move to set the stage for a new era in space collaboration.

“No longer will we treat India’s space programme as a target; rather, we hope that it will become a close partner,” he said, disclosing: “We are seeking additional ways to collaborate on future lunar missions, the international space station, human space flight, and data sharing.”

“Like our clean energy efforts, a natural partnership exists between India’s human enterprise and the United States’ storied history of pioneering space exploration,” he said while delivering a talk at Syracuse University in upstate New York on the theme of “India: The Rise of an Economic Power”.

Expressing the hope that private sector firms would now have the opportunity to cooperate in the space arena, Blake said Commerce Secretary Gary Locke has planned a meeting with ISRO during his India visit next month to explore collaborative ventures.
