kumarN Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna on Thursday said India would take up the matter of several Indian students left in the lurch owing to the closure of a U.S. university, after receiving a report from its Washington embassy.“We have asked for a report from our embassy and when a report is issued, we will be taking it up with the U.S. government,'' the Minister told journalists here. Till the issue is sorted out, Indian missions have been told that they would have to look after the welfare of the students. At the same time, Mr. Krishna found it “strange'' that the affected students had not approached the Indian missions in the U.S. so far.According to a U.S. government complaint filed in a California court, the university had helped foreign nationals acquire immigration status illegally. According to reports, Tri-Valley University was shut down on suspicion of immigration fraud and the overwhelming majority of the students were from India. The reports further said the Indian students, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, could be deported as they had lost the student visa status.According to State Department transcripts, its spokesperson P.J. Crowley said with regard to the issue that, “any activity involving visa fraud would obviously be of great concern to us. The investigation of that is done by law enforcement, obviously with our cooperation, since we are the ones who issue visas.''Source::http://www.thehindu.com/education/issues/article1130444.ece

kumarN Posted January 28, 2011 Author Report Posted January 28, 2011 Delhi, Jan 28 (ANI): As the fate of Indian students duped by American university in California hangs in the balance, New Delhi hopes that the US authorities will treat the students well and accommodate them suitably in appropriate academic institutions, as they went for studies with 'valid student visas'.Buzz up!Hundreds of Indian students, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, are facing the prospect of deportation from the US after authorities raided and shut down Tri-Valley University in the Silicon Valley on charges of massive immigration fraud."We are in touch with the US authorities and our concern is the welfare of the students, I hope they are treated well by the authorities," top government sources said.Earlier on Thursday, a group of around 35 students from the banned Tri-Valley University (TVU) met Consul General of San Francisco Sushmita Gongulee Thomas in this regard.India is seeking factual position from the US Government on the status of these students and how these students can be helped in transfer to the other colleges, so that they can complete their studies. The students are worried over media reports media that indicate that all students of the TVU were part of the scam. Many of the Trans Valley University students, specially the more recent ones and some who got transferred from other accredited universities, were unaware of the true nature of the university and have suddenly become the victims.According to a federal complaint filed in a California court last week, the University helped foreign nationals illegally acquire immigration status. The university is said to have 1,555 students. As many as 95 percent of these students are Indian nationals, the complaint said.Investigations by Immigration and Custom Enforcement found that while students were admitted to various residential and on-line courses of the university and on paper lived in California, but in reality they 'illegally' worked in various parts of the country as far as Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Texas.India sends more than one lakh students and is the second largest student community in United States.Source::http://news.oneindia.in/2011/01/28/indianstudents-went-to-us-with-validvisas-aid0121.html
kumarN Posted January 28, 2011 Author Report Posted January 28, 2011 Founder of Tri-Valley charged with visa fraud WASHINGTON: Susan Xiao-Ping Su, founder of the “sham” Tri-Valley University in California which has mostly students from Andhra Pradesh on its rolls, has been charged with running an elaborate immigration fraud, netting millions of dollars from foreign nationals hoping to migrate to the US.The fate of the university's 1,555 students, 95 per cent of whom are from India and mostly Andhra Pradesh, remains unclear amid reports that some of them being questioned after raids by the US Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) last week.A hearing in the case has been set for April, according to reports from California. India has, meanwhile, sought a report from its missions in the US on the students affected after the University was shut down by authorities. “We have asked for a report from our Embassy and from our Consulate General and when a report is issued, we will be taking it up with the government of the US,” External Affairs minister S M Krishna told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday. He said that the mission has been instructed to look into the welfare of the students. However, he found it “strange” that the affected students had not approached the Indian Consulate so far. There has been no word yet from the US Immigration authorities on the fate of the students who, it is feared, could be deported. The US State Department has voiced concern over the fraud, with spokesman Philip J Crowley commenting on Wednesday: “Any activity involving visa fraud would obviously be of great concern to us. The investigation of that is done by law enforcement, obviously with our cooperation, since we are the ones who issue visas.”"Since 9/11, one of the areas that we as a government have strengthened is tracking, so that if you come here on a student visa, you have to check in and you have to go to school. That is a requirement of that programme,” he said. The university apparently operated out of a small, two-storey building in Pleasanton. “Since its inception, Tri-Valley University has been a sham university, which Su, and others have used to facilitate foreign nationals in illegally acquiring student immigration status that authorizes them to remain in the United States,” a complaint filed by the US Attorney's Office said.Accusing her of making false statements and misrepresentations in petitions to the Department of Homeland Security to obtain student visas, the complaint said: “Su and Tri-Valley University have made millions of dollars in tuition fees for issuing these visa related documents which enable foreign nationals (to) obtain illegal student immigrant status.”Su used the ill-gotten money to buy five properties, including the two Pleasanton homes that were raided by ICE, media report said. Citing federal documents, Danville Express, a California based online newspaper, reported that Su had been charged with money laundering, mail fraud and wire fraud.Source::http://expressbuzz.com/cities/hyderabad/founder-of-tri-valley-charged-with-visa-fraud/243141.html
