[b]Bangalore techies make graphic novel series created by a Delhi-based Merchant Navy officer available on your smart phones

They are techies who have, and will in all likelihood, never see a war in their lives. Let alone fight. So, how do they show their sense of patriotism and pride in the Indian Army? By doing what they do best: give them a technology-aided salute. Just what Amit Rana and Shyamal Mehta, founder of Techjini Solutions Pvt Ltd have done.

The duo, who met while working in Infosys have taken the popular ‘Indian War Heroes’ comic series, created by Aditya Bakshi (a Delhi-based Merchant Navy officer) onto iPad.

WHAT AN IDEA!
The idea, to recreate the comics onto iPad, was spurred by an article they read about Aditya. Shyamal recalls, “We both read the article about Aditya Bakshi’s comic on Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan in a leading newspaper. The idea struck us both that we should do it.” Amit adds, “I wanted to join the army when I was a child. So, when I read about the Indian War Heroes story, I felt this was the least we could do to spread awareness of our unsung military heroes.”

They contacted Bakshi, who was initially reluctant. “He didn’t take our calls the first few times and assumed we were looking at it commercially.”

Persistence, however, paid off and Bakshi agreed to get his works digitised. What also made the duo confident about taking on the project was the fact that “we have a team that is strong in iPhone and iPad application development”. The digital version of the comics today is available on their iPad app - Jinibooks (a magazine/comic/book stand featuring content from small to medium size publishers and authors).

Conceived on August 15, 2010, the team of eight techies accomplished the project of recreating the comics on November 26, 2010. The project was symbolically launched at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai.

“Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s dad was present at the event,” Amit reveals.

TAKING IT TO THE WORLD
The three comic books in the series chronicle the lives of Army heroes. ‘Yeh Dil Maange More’, is based on late Capt Vikram Batra who fought in the Kargil war, ‘True Maratha’ on Col N G Nair (the most decorated Indian soldier) while late Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s heroics from the 26/11 attack are the subject of the third book titled ‘Braveheart of Mumbai’. “The emotions the stories invoke in you cannot be described in words,” says Shyamal.

Apart from interactivity, the online avatar of the comics has additional features. So, the story of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan is accompanied by a widget on the 26/11 attacks.

HOW TO ACCESS
Accessing the comics is quite simple. Explains Amit, “Once a user downloads the Jinibooks app, which is free, he gains access to the comic books, which can be downloaded for a payment of $1.99 each.” All earnings from the project will be donated to the NSG fund. Conceding that the number of iPad users might currently be limited, the duo reveal that the Jinibook app will very soon be available on android phones.
