Tirumala Visit Only once a year....

HYDERABAD: If the state has its way, then every individual can have the darshan of Lord Venkatershwara only once a year. Alarmed at the manner in which the number of devotees visiting the Tirupati temple is swelling each year, the state is mulling installation of biometric tokens and restricting the entry of each devotee to only once a year.

The specified authority overseeing the working of TTD is all set to place the proposal before CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy once the experts committee submits its report in March. The state has reasons to worry over the possible collapse of the infrastructure facilities on the world's richest shrine in view of the increasing rush.

At present, two crore devotees visit Lord Balaji's abode for darshan every year. As per the latest survey done by TTD, this number will cross 3.5 crore a year by 2015. Despite the best facilities and security arrangements, the temple will not be able to handle this rush, said officials. "As of now, we are not thinking of imposing quota on devotees visits. But the increasing figures are forcing us to rethink," J Satyanarayana, chairman of the TTD Specified Authority, told STOI. On an average, 4,000 devotees have darshan of the deity every hour which means more than one per second. And on an average day, the temple is thronged by 50,000 people. The number of pilgrims swells during special days and festive occasions. During events like the annual Brahmotsavams and Vaikunta Ekadasi, more than one lakh pilgrims visit the temple every day while during Garuda Seva, the fifth day of the Brahmotsavams, there could be 2 lakh to 5 lakh pilgrims waiting for darshan.

There are several vulnerable spots in the temple like foot-over-bridge where queues converge, and Vendi Vakili where the entrance is narrow and at the sanctum sanctorum, all of which demand that the number of devotees is regulated in order to ensure their safety.

Apart from the crowding at Tirumala, the rush is also straining the transport services ferrying the people. On an average, the vehicular traffic including RTC and private buses on the ghat road is over 14,000 a day. During the peak season, it increases by 20 per cent while during Garuda Seva and Brahmotsvams, the traffic becomes chock-a-block.

At present, TTD issues 7,500 to 15,000 biometric tokens free and an additional 4,000 tokens at Rs 50 each everyday. These wristbands cannot be transferred and the devotee can enter the Vaikuntam Queue Complex only at the stipulated time. If the proposal to impose restrictions is approved, then such biometric tokens will restrict the entry of a devotee to only once a year.
