Deletedid1 Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 Polo team upset fancied British opponents 6-4Polo gaining ground in India is a known fact. But an Indian team beating the British in it is a breakthrough. Guests were obviously there, cheering and jeering with their hats and glares right at the places where they are supposed to be. Excited faces and hooraying seemed to be the flavour of the day as fans cheered for their favourite teams and were keen to know at whose den the ball popped. The Indian team, led by Col Tarun Sarohi, displayed some brilliant riding skills to defeat the visitors by 6-4 to lift the Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Cup with Samir Suhag scoring four goals while Tarun and Major Ravi Rathore scored a goal each. But the English players did give a tough fight to their Indian counterparts managing to score four goals with Satnam Singh Dhillon scoring two and James Carr and Eden Ormerod scoring one each. The match was witnessed by big names like the Prince Vikramaditya Singh, Maharani Priya Raje Scindia, Chetan and Manya Seth, AD Singh, Jaisal Singh, Princess Bhargavi and her husband Prince Lokender Singh, Ramola Bachchan, Anjalee-Arjun Kapoor, Anupama Verma, Ramneek Pantal, Rajat Gupta, Harmeet Bajaj, Nischi Singh, Vesna Jacob, Navneet and Kitty Kalra and the Chief of Army staff, General VK Singh.Speaking on the occasion, General Singh said the sport is yet to be recognised in India but wants it to gain popularity soon. “Polo has been the game of royals and that perhaps is the reason the common man has chosen to stay away from it. However, efforts are on to popularise the sport and I’m sure its future in the country is bright.” Sharing his views about the game, Indian captain Col Sarohi seemed confident about the game’s success here as he compared it with cricket. “Cricket was also played by maharajas and rajas and not a common man’s game 60 years ago but has got the maximum number of admirers all over the world today. I’m sure, in the same manner, polo too will find place in the hearts of Indians one day and become one of the most-liked games.”
