YSR Brand articles sale is a big hit in AP

YSR memorabilia are fast becoming a big business in Andhra Pradesh. Merchants — who have been making a killing by selling merchandise with YSR’s image since his death in the chopper crash — have now hit upon a bigger money-spinner straight from China.

If earlier it was paperweights, pen stands and key chains with the late leader’s mug, it’s now a made-in-China YSR toy that waves its hands in his popular style of greeting crowds.

The Chinese manufacturers were roped in after huge demand for such toys and, according to insiders, even small traders have earned profits in the range of Rs 8-10 lakh. “The Chinese suppliers have delivered in a span of just two weeks. We have never earned such profits with products based on a political leader,” said Mohan Reddy, a toy dealer in Vijayawada.

Traders file their orders via e-mail along with YSR’s picture. “A simple mechanism of a clock was used to make YSR’s left hand wave continuously. This toy costs Rs 150 in the local market,” said a local trader, who imported it for Rs 70 a piece.

Sources said some plastic and wooden manufacturers from Delhi have also entered the market by offering the products at low prices. “The Delhi traders engage small-scale industries in Rajasthan for supply of wooden carvings in given shapes, while the pasting of photos is done in Delhi. We are getting wooden toys with YSR’s picture engraved on them,’’ says Lakshmi Narayana, a trader in

Guntur.

Congress leaders are also vying with each other for installing life-size YSR statues in the state capital. Bronze statues range between Rs 2 and Rs 3 lakh and concrete ones cost around Rs 1 lakh. “We are unable to meet the heavy demand and we are even thinking of importing fibre statues,” a sculptor in Amaravathi said. “With Congress leaders competing with one another, the demand for fibre idols has increased by leaps and bounds. By a conservative estimate, at least 20,000 statues of YSR will dot several streets in the state,” merchant SunnamNarayana predicted.
