About 70 lakh voters in Andhra Pradesh gave him their support in the 2009 elections.The channel quotes a fan who says, "We have always loved Chiranjeevi and were happy that he started a party after his film career.... But now he has joined the Congress while we wanted him to lead a separate party"On February 6, Chiranjeevi met Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and announced the merger, saying it would strengthen both parties.Chiranjeevi had contested the 2009 assembly elections on the social justice plank. His long-term success as a movie star won him 18 seats when he faced the electorate, but it was too little for him to dream of forming a government in the 294-seat Andhra Pradesh assembly. The ruling Congress has 156 legislators.Sonia Gandhi's decision to rope Chiranjeevi into her party was prompted by Jaganmohan Reddy, the expelled Congressman who has emerged as a challenger to the ruling party. Jagan has been rallying support all over the state in the name of his father YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the chief minister who died in a helicopter crash.
