World beneath her feet : calling DB girls

BANGALORE: When girls her age were watching Cartoon Network and imitating Barbie, little Kavitha would look at airplanes. Little wonder then, that she went on to become an Indian Air Force pilot.

At 24, Kavitha Prabhu, who graduated from Mount Carmel College, has 120 flying hours to her credit. "I was commissioned as a pilot in December 2010. Initially, like any child, I wanted to be a doctor or engineer. But I was very fond of my cousin, squadron leader Vaidya. I wanted to do everything he does. We all have our role models. I would read up on aircraft. My childhood dream started then, and I began to chase it," Kavitha said.

In Class 11, she joined the air wing of NCC and went on to study Science in college. "Then I began to drift and joined Yahoo as a content specialist. My mother, Rekha Prabhu, reminded me about my childhood dream of becoming a pilot. My parents were a big support and no one opposed me from pursuing a rather dangerous profession. Today, I am the only girl in the family in the forces. My father, Anand, would always introduce me as the boy of the family,'' Kavitha said.

What does it feel to be in the skies? "It's like having the world beneath you. I have always loved adventure. My ultimate aim is to fly the Su-30 someday,'' she said.

For Kavitha, who chased her dream from the age of five, that shouldn't be impossible.
