Kalyan ram is very down to earth --Interview

Kalyan Ram Nandamuri is the most simplest hero among typical Telugu film heroes. He is completely grounded and unassuming. He doesn't believe in hype and he wants his films to talk about him. After doing two critically acclaimed films like Athanokkade and Hare Ram, Kalyan Ram is producing and acting in a comedy entertainer called Jayeebhava. Jayeebhava is all set to release on 23 October. Idlebrain.com caught up with this nice human being for an exclusive interview. Here are the excerpts -

Why do you keep low profile?

I always feel that audiences should talk about the movie instead of filmmakers. I am away from hyping my projects. If they have stuff in it, then movies will automatically run.

Tell us about Jayeebhava director Naren?

Naren Kondepati worked with Teja and Krishna Vamsi in the past. I knew Naren from the days of Lakshmi Kalyanam. He worked for Vijaya Dasami and Hare Ram in the direction department. In fact he choreographed a song of Hare Ram that comes in the second half. He has clarity of mind and he knows what he wants and how to extract it.

Which genre does Jayeebhava belong to?

Jayeebhav means blessing. Jayeebhava is a family entertainer told in a commercial format. Love plays a small role in the movie, but this movie is all about family relationships. Heroine didn't have equal importance in none of my earlier films. But the heroine in Jayeebhava has equal importance with that of hero. There will be lot of comedy with the casting of top notch comedians like Brahmanandam and Ali. The hero in this movie has a mission to do something good to his family.

Which certificate Jayeebhava obtained from censor office?

Jayeebhava obtained clean U with neither a visual cut nor a dialogue cut. A lady censor officer gave me a terrific feedback about the movie saying that it's a clean family entertainer with loads of comedy. There are not huge actions episodes. Entire movie is filled with fun. There is no skin show though we sported a hot glamorous actress like Hansika Motwani.

You are known for having terrific mass action sequences in your films since Athanokkade. What is the reason for turning towards comedy and entertainment with Jayeebhava?

If you look at the big hits in the recent past, they are either magnum opuses like Arundhati and Magadheera or comedy entertainers like Ready, King and Kick. Trivikram and Seenu Vytla scored a lot with movie lovers with their brand of comedy. A huge mass director like VV Vinayak is also banking on comedy to appeal to more crowds. Comedy is the in thing. Hence I made sure that Jayeebhava offers 100% clean comedy and healthy entertainment.

I still remember my experience of watching Athanokkade movie in Bramarambha movie in Kukatpally. The best scene in the movie is the head chopping off scene towards interval. But a lady sitting near to me felt that it was gross (jugupsa). Jayeebhava is a kind of movie where all family crowds will watch it without even a single discomforting scene.

Tell us about the highlights of Jayeebhava?

The comedy in this movie will be a highlight. I am happy with the music provided by SS Thaman. There is a novel element in the second half of the movie. There is different approach in the second half where heroine will have equal importance. The villain character in this movie is sophisticated, unlike brutal villain characters shown in regular movies. In Hare Ram movie, we exposed the pharmacy mafia. There is another interesting angle in this movie. We have shot a song for kids in this movie. It sports nice animation like the Bobbili Raja song in early 90's. Our special effects team worked for over five and half months over it.

What is your gut feel about Jayeebhava?

Jayeebhava will be a fresh entertainer with lots of comedy quotient. It is a kind of film that entire family could watch without any worry. You will have nice feeling about the movie when you leave theaters.

You are having considerable number of producers coming forward to make movies with you. Why are you doing majority of your movies on home banner of NTR arts?

I am always open to work with other producers. I am a kind of guy who doesn't want to trouble others. If you look at all the movies produced on NTR Arts, they have some element of risk involved. I want to take that risk and save outside producers. I don't want even a single person to suffer because of me. If i find a project to be comfortable for outside producers, then I will accept outside banners.

You acted in seven films so far. Which emotion is difficult to portray as an actor?

I feel that emotional scenes are more challenging to perform. Casual scenes and comedy scenes are easy. But you need to be in that mood consistently to perform emotional scenes.

Most of your movies are directed by first timers. Why don't you do projects with top league directors like Rajamouli, VV Vinayak, Seenu Vytla, Trivikram etc?

I am a grounded guy and I know my limitations. My market was 1.8 crores at the time of Athanokkade release. It started increasing film by film. Now, I am in a good stage commercially. But it is not enough to get the directors you mentioned interested in me. I am climbing up the ladder step by step. When I reach a certain stage, I will be in a position to act in their movies.

What is your dream character?

I am still on the learning curve. I am improving with each movie. Once I develop as a better actor, then I might think about dream roles.

How do you manage two roles of producer and actor?

I leave the production hassles to Hari Krishna (brother of Kalyan Ram's wife Ms. Swathi). He took care of all the tensions of productions and money. I concenrated more on improving my acting skills and voice modulation.

Tell us about your next project?

I am planning to produce another movie on NTR Arts with me as hero. This film will be launched in November 2009. This movie will have little bit of sentiment along with all commercial elements.
