UK to give 280 million pounds in aid to India

LONDON: India will continue to be UK's biggest recipient of overseas aid — to the tune of 280 million pounds per annum or over 1 billion pounds over the next four years. This is expected to be confirmed by the UK's minister for international development Andrew Mitchell on Tuesday.

Mitchell's announcement is likely to be controversial and unappetising for his own Conservative party. Tory lawmakers have pointed out that India is an emerging economic power with an annual 8.5% GDP growth rate, a net donor country in its own right, not to mention it being a nuclear weapon state with an advanced space programme. British aid to Russia and China has been terminated. In future, Serbia, Moldovia, Cambodia and Vietnam will also disappear from the UK government's needy list.

Mitchell argues that India still has more people living in extreme poverty than anywhere on the planet. Such a statement could also be interpreted as a reality check that despite India's boasts, it remains behind the curve on alleviating poverty.
