Jaipur: A 28-year-old man was beaten to death for refusing to pay 50 paise more for a gutka pouch at Bhongara in Rajasthan’s Banswara district on Sunday night.

Manish was beaten after an argument following his refusal to pay the extra money due to revised gutka rates. “They (Manish and his friend) stopped at a roadside shop to purchase 10 gutka pouches. The shopkeeper asked them to pay Rs 5 extra (50 paise per pouch) as the prices had increased,” a police officer said.

The two paid Rs 10 and asked for 10 pouches according to the old rates. “They refused to pay and got into an argument with the shopkeeper and three others. Manish and his friend were then thrashed.” The two were rushed to a hospital where Manish died.

Banswara SP Lata Manoj Kumar said three youth—Iqbaal, Zaheer and Shahid—were arrested for allegedly beating Manish to death after his father lodged an FIR against them. “Prima facie, it appears that dispute over the increased gutka price turned ugly and led to a scuffle,” said Kumar.

An official said extra police force was deployed in the region to maintain law and order.
