bongule Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata’s “personal and confidential” letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi praising former Telecom Minister A Raja for his “rational, fair and action-oriented leadership” has raked up yet another controversy. While Karunandihi’s assertion of not having received any such letter from Tata falls flat, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa accused the Tatas of being no exception to the prevailing trend of politicised commercialism. In fact, she held the Karunanidhi family responsible for the sad transformation of India’s oldest and most reputed business house. In fact, as it turns out, the handwritten letter, dated November 13, 2007, by Tata was “personally” sent by controversial lobbyist Nira Radia to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Tata Teleservices was granted the dual policy, which allowed them to operate in the much-wanted DSM sector, by Raja during this period. The personal and confidential letter getting leaked has only raised the hackles for the Tata Group, whose Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL) officials are next on the radar of the CBI to be probed. It, however, nails the lies of Karunanidhi, who denied having received any letter from Ratan Tata. “No such letter reached me, and nobody handed over such a letter to me in person,” he had written in the party organ, responding to allegations in this regard by Jayalalithaa.“In fact, it was she who wrote to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi against her political mentor late MG Ramachandran saying he was ‘unfit’ to be the Chief Minister,” Karunandihi countered.Jayalalithaa blamed Tata for “unethical” practices and said the CBI should probe into the kickbacks received by Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi and her mother Rajathi Ammal through the telecom scams.“For generations of Indians, if there was one word which spelt “trust” and “integrity”, it was the word Tata. One of the legendary tales in the Indian industry about the Tata Group was that “Tatas don’t bribe” and “Tatas don’t indulge in politics”. Unfortunately, all those tales belong to the past.“Today, it has become embarrassingly public that the Tatas are no exception to the prevailing trend of politicised commercialism. And full credit for this sad transformation of India’s oldest and most reputed business house goes to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and his omni-present, omnipotent family members,” said Jayalalithaa.“Ratan Tata’s blue-eyed boy, Andimuthu Raja is now in CBI custody, being grilled for irregularities which have caused the Nation a loss of `1,76,000 Cores. One shudders to think what excesses might have been indulged in by Raja’s predecessor and his vested interest groups,” she said.Tata Teleservices said, “Ratan Tata’s letter to the DMK chief written in November 2007, relates to various policy announcements on spectrum and other issues not implemented for years, despite being legally sound, rational and well-reasoned. The letter underlines the fact that the said policy announcements would demolish the powerful technology bias which was inhibiting free growth for all operators.”
