Investigators further allege that the prime minister abused his office bypersonally telephoning a police station in Milan last May to have Miss ElMahroug, nicknamed Ruby the Heart Stealer, released on unrelated theftcharges.Paying for sex with a prostitute who is under 18 is an offence under Italianlaw which carries a maximum penalty of three years in jail. The abuse of office charge carries a prison term of between four and 12years.Since entering politics 17 years ago Mr Berlusconi Italy's third richestman has faced numerous trials on allegations of corruption, tax evasionand other corporate malpractice, but this is the first time that he has beenindicted for conduct in his private life.Opposition parties said the allegations were so grave that the primeminister had no option but to resign."Leave the premiership, let us not be the laughing stock of the world," saidAlessandro Maran of the Democratic Party, the main opposition bloc.Mr Berlusconi's lawyers have questioned the investigators' competence tobring the case on the basis that the alleged encounters happened at thepremier's mansion on the outskirts of Milan, outside the court'sjurisdiction. They have said that the case should be dealt with by the Ministers Tribunal,a special section of the magistracy that deals with accusations againstministers.Mr Berlusconi has justified making the call to the police station because hesaid he believed Miss El Mahroug when she told him that she was thegranddaughter of Egypt's recently toppled ruler, Hosni Mubarak, and that hewanted to avoid a diplomatic incident.
