happygoing Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 We may think that we live in a time of great invention and innovation, and we do, but there are actually many things that were created long before our civilizations were ever conceived. In fact, there are some inventions we use on a regular basis right now, which were invented not 100, nor even 1,000 years ago. Many of these were invented over 2,200 years ago in Ancient Greece, one of the greatest civilizations the world has ever seen.MAPSFor a very long time, there were no maps, except for vague interpretations that may have been written by sailors. It was not until the Greeks, specifically Anaximander, who lived from 610 to 546 BC, that maps were created in the way that we know them. It was Anaximander who created maps with the concept of latitude and longitude, and it was later Greeks Eratosthenes and Strabo who created maps of the entire known world at the time.

The thermometer is a very old invention that dates back to the Greeks of Alexandria who discovered that air expanded when heated. Philo of Byzantium, who lived 2,000 years ago, made a basic thermometer that used this concept. Roughly 1,600 years later, Galileo would use this same concept and put a scale on it to help distinguish temperature so that people could know how hot or cold it was on any given day of the week.

It was them who invented central heating, which was then improved upon by the Romans using a hypocaust system. After the fall of the Roman Empire, central heating mostly disappeared but it would be rediscovered 1,500 years later during the Industrial Revolution

Some of the greatest of their construction inventions include:
happygoing Posted February 16, 2011 Author Report Posted February 16, 2011 Crane: Created around 515 BC in Greece, this helped to make it easier to build large buildings, pushing humanity from spreading out, to pushing up into the sky.Spiral Staircase: Between 480 and 470 BC, the spiral staircase was first used in a Temple in Sicily.Urban Planning: It was the Greeks, in their city of Miletus, where a grid formation was used for residential and public streets and areas. This helped lead to another invention of the Greeks; surveying. A couple centuries after urban planning was invented in the 400s BC, surveying tools made their first appearance and would help to create the Roman aqueducts in later centuries.Winch: Created in the 400s BC, wooden winches were invented by the Greeks to tighten cables on bridges.Wheelbarrow: Something so simple made its first appearance thanks to the Greeks in the 400s BC, appearing between 408 and 406 BC.Water Mill: Around 250 BC, water power was pioneered by the Greeks in the form of the water mill.
