NEW DELHI: The US today said Indian students stranded in that country following closing down of California-based Tri-Valley University (TVU) will get "fair and appropriate" treatment.

"We are working closely with the Indian government on the issue of Tri-Valley University and ensuring fair and appropriate treatment of Indian students," US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer said in a statement here today.

India has been pushing for a quick solution to the plight of the Indian students who were forced to wear radio tags by the US immigration authorities after the university was shut down on charges of massive visa fraud.

The remarks came close on the heels of External Affairs Minister S M Krishna taking up the issue with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who assured India of intervening into and solving the issue.

Noting that US was very proud to host the more than 100,000 Indian students studying there, Roemer said they were an important and contributing part of the American academic community.

"As a father, I understand the joy of seeing a child focus on their studies and succeed and as the US representative in India, I ensure that my team is fully committed to helping students make best informed educational decisions possible," he said.

He also said there are many resources available publicly to help students educate themselves on the dangers of predatory visa fraud rings and to protect them from committing visa fraud.

It is important that all students take advantage of free resources offered by them by the Embassy and fully research the academic options available to them, he said, adding all students wishing to study in the US are strongly encouraged to attend free seminars hosted by the embassy.
