Following the assistance of one person from ACLU, Shah Peerally Law Group PC and John Vandenberg of HVlawgroup wrote to

Kareem Shora

Senior Policy Advisor

Section Lead, Community Engagement Section
US Department of Homeland Security
Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties

On February 16 2011 – this was the first answer

“I hope all is great with you and thank you for alerting me to this situation and the introduction to Shah. Shah, do you have more details or background you can share informally first with me via email? I will raise the matter here internally first but will check to see if we will likely require the filing of formal complaints via our new complaint form process which we just launched in January.”

Following this email attorney John and Shah sent two other emails explaining the situation.

On February 17, 2011 we received a personal email:

“Shah and John,

Thanks for all this information. I’ve started things moving internally here and hope to be of help as we start looking into this issue.”

Remember this is an internal department of Department of Homeland Security and it seems they were not  aware of the situation. It seems we are finally able to reach a DHS section which is sympathetic to the cause. This is good news…..

We would like all of you to send us a short paragraph email of your situation, the difficulties you are facing, and the treatment you received from ICE or the school. Please email this on

[email protected]

We are going to compile this to send a quick email without mentioning names to this Mr. Kareem Shora to give an idea of the extent of the difficulties faced by the students.
