After coming out of the hall one felt that the director forgot to add one scene at the end of the film. He should have included the bytes, the superlative tributes that RaNa was giving on the film to a publicity programme by Kalamandir, that would have been picture perfect, a perfect finishing touch to the movie. His comments were as superficial and disgusting like the awards that Appalaraju's crew received from Uttej. The publicity overdrive that the director indulged in has backfired, if you are expecting something exciting or spectacular from this movie then google for the trailers, apart from those clippings there isn't much in the film either.A spoof, a joke is something that everyone enjoys but anything in excess kills the curiosity and the taste, even if it means the creator has resorted to self deprecatory dialogues or harmless digs. That is exactly what has happened with Appalaraju. Ram Gopal Varma publicized the film as a story that reflects the current situation of the film industry and it's people, the audience instead of enjoying the content started the guessing game right from scene one trying to figure out who Babu was or who a single eyed Raju was. For the people in the industry, media the film will not mean anything..there is nothing extra to tell other than what the director told us at every song launch every week..that it is about a man who's passionate about cinema wanting to offer something different to the people. The director finds an alter ego in Appalaraju, he is shocked at the audiences taste when his torn and tattered film becomes a super hit and earns awards for the same. Instead of a happy expression, Appalaraju is seen taking the much schewed award in disbelief. The bottomline of the film is that the audience bestows it's everlasting love on senseless mundane movies and the directors who come to the industry to make sensible movies are forced into giving what the audience wants, not what the director wants to offer, he is forced into an irredeemable corrupt system.A story on film industry reminds us of Neninthe. The serious movie was rejected at the BO despite being made passionately with gut wrenching performance by Ravi Teja. Varma set out to make more or less a similar story but in an entertaining format hoping to hit big time like Nayaki but sadly for the audiences he dishes out a tormenting drama. He humiliates everyone in the industry, the craft to the awards generalizing almost everything including the intelligence of the audience big time in the guise of a spoof. In an over enthusiasm to rip apart every character in the making of a film, he doesn't establish any single character completely, perfectly. It's a half baked film in which he trusts the audience to laugh over the dupes dialogues or revel in juvenile jokes on characters that closely resemble people in the industry or the media. There could be plenty of truth in what he conveyed but the manner he did so was dragging, uninteresting. The film moves at a snail's pace and the scenes especially..when Harsha and Sunil argue while eating an ice cream or Swathi and Sunil argue on a topic over 'seriousness' is agonising. What could be the in-thing or the latest in conversation style just tests your patience. The lyrics of a few songs especially wherein the hero compares the world to a stage and God to a director was very good. Ditto with the prelude to the film in which the director talks about Appalaraju's tragedy and comedy that gelled perfectly with the climax scene. The biggest farce and high drama was the entire episode of chasing each other and burning the print. Sunil's honesty and earnestness in his performance comes across crystal clear, every bone in his body and every expression spoke of his dedication to cinema. In most of the songs/dances he resembled Chiranjeevi, and could be easily mistaken for him. Wish Varma put in the same amount of sincerity he extracted from Sunil on the rest of the actors. Senior actors like MS Narayana, Kota were thoroughly wasted. Right from the beginning of the film to the last there isn't one joke that would make you smile despite the ensemble lot of comedians.Venu Madhav to some extent getting frustrated on not having anyone to kill was good. After having watched Brahmanandam in innumerable clichéd roles, nothing of him worked. Aadarsh, Ajay suited the roles of the respective heroes of the industry, the heroine [Sakshi Gulati] was a poor woman's Sridevi. Swathi is perfect as the new age assistant director. Criticizing cinema is not a fun game, to show of your tastes, opinions is a privilege. Varma takes a dig at media personalities and role of media in conniving with distributors to sabotage the fate of cinema and through misusing the power in their hands.Whether it is, a journalist or a director, the audience, the people give them a long rope. If we take this authority, privilege for granted, losing respect for opinion and piece of art is just a matter of time. Overconfidence and lackadaisical attitude for work spells nothing but doom. Finally is 'Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalaraju' worth watching? No. More than Appalaraju's success story or his journey, you get to see the director's enthusiasm in churning out a hit in a hurry.RGV's tweets are far more entertaining than this film, having said this all the best to the Gang Of Thieves [Dongala Muta]!
