Brother,
First of all, are you aware that HSMP was no more and the scheme ended on 31st,March,2008 and was replaced by something called as Tier-1 General?
I hope you know this and I expect you have used the terms HSMP & Tier-1 interchangeably.
If you don't know this difference, cool down yourself as Tier-1 for out-of-country(UK) applications was already ended on 31,Dec,2010 and it is going to be ended on 5th, April,2011 for in-country applications.
In both the cases there is nothing much left out to be done if you are about to start the application process now.
B'coz, there is something called as Maintenance Fund requirement and you need to satisfy it for 3 months and even if you start at this minute, it will be too late as the Tier-1 General scheme will be ended.
Any more doubts?

Brother,
This is the problem, if I have to tell you. Please never mind....I am not blaming you, this is exactly the reason why Tier-1 is going to abolished. Its not your mistake that (while you are in PSW, a fresh MS Student mostly) you could not get a job which pays 35k Pounds annually to you when people with 10 years of experience are struggling to get a break (of 30k) in this country. But on the flip side, there is this alternative....you can show any amount (even 1,00,000 Pounds per annum) using Self-Employment but then again there are people (almost all) who has exploited this to the core and has shown the profits before Tax but never paid tax on this self-employment.
Only thing I can suggest you (hoping that you are maintaining funds since 3 months) is that please pay the Tax for what ever 'you have shown' as thousands of people rushed their applications in last month to UKBA on this Self-Employment and UKBA is making thorough checks whether they have paid the taxes or not. This information that I have got was revealed by one of my relatives working in UKBA and people based in 'East Ham', 'Hounslow', 'Wembley', 'Barking' of London and who have shown abnormal claims will be in biggest trouble!
Anyways, my guess is right that you are using the terms Tier-1 and HSMP alternatively.
