cinderella man Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 HYDERABAD: Even as the projected cost of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project going overboard by the day, civil society groups are demanding an independent committee of experts to look into the project viability. While officials have given a target of 15 lakh passengers travelling by metro daily by 2015, the Citizens for Better Public Transportation (CBPT) believe the figures are highly inflated and the project is not commercially viable. The group has demanded that an independent committee of experts be constituted to review the āunrealistic and misleading projectā.Also discrepancies in target passenger figures per day saw a marked reduction when the project was handed over to L&T from Maytas. For example, Corridor-I (Miyapur to LB Nagar) had projected number of passengers in 2011 (when the project was with Maytas) to be 8.40 lakh per day. The number has been decreased to 7.80 lakh per day in 2012, as per statistics provided by HMR officials at an investors meet in 2006.āThe concession agreement signed with Maytas in 2008 mentions a target traffic of 2.75 crore per km per day by October 2021. However, when L&T came into the picture, it was reduced to 2.12 crore for October 2024 even as number of years increased by three,ā said Prof C Ramachandraiah, social scientist and convene, CBPT.Going by international experience, actual traffic would be only one-third of the projected traffic. āAccordingly, Corridors II and III are a total waste of money, about `9,000 crore for 43.52 km, along with additional costs of demolition of thousands of properties, loss of livelihood and defacing the city,ā said Dr Vakulabharam Vamsi, associate professor in economics, University of Hyderabad.āOn what basis had the number of passengers decreased from 4.44 lakh to 3.06 lakh in Corridor-II when there was no change in route? Now there is a change in alignment in the entire Old City. In that case what will happen to passengers?ā asks Ramachandraiah.Speaking at a press conference in the city, representatives of the CBPT negated the possibility of 16 to 17 percent returns as projected and demanded a separate independent committee be formed for review.āThe HMR project is highly unrealistic and misleading. This may be only to influence banks for lending huge loans and hoodwink the public while going for a public issue. We strongly feel the project is based on several wrong assumptions. If the documents are not made public, it is likely to become another scam,ā added Ramachandraiah.
