The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has zeroed in on a massive underground chamber on the moon, which could be used by future lunar explorers to house sensitive equipment and set up base during inter-planetary missions.

The Space Applications Centre (SAC) scientists, while analyzing data from Chandrayaan-I's Terrain Mapping Camera and Hyper Spectral Imager (HySI) payloads, searched out a 1.2 km long lava tube lying buried just near the lunar equator, which, they said, could be used to house astronauts and scientific equipment and also help protect them from the harsh lunar environment.

A team of scientists, led by AS Arya of SAC, Ahmedabad, published their findings in the 'Current Science' magazine, which said "Such a lava tube could be a potential site for future human habitability…providing a safe environment from hazardous radiation, micro-meteoritic impacts, extreme temperatures and dust storms."

The report said that the lava tube would provide a conducive environment where temperatures would remain constant at around minus 20 degrees Celsius, unlike the lunar surface, where one could expect extreme variations from a maximum of 130 degrees Celsius during daytime to a minus of 180 degrees Celsius during night.

The structure at a depth of about six meters would also shield the astronauts from the harmful effects of galactic cosmic rays, the study said, adding that below a depth of one meter, the harmful effects of radiation are negligible

But is that really possible to use the Tunnels inside the moon for docking the Equipment..

If they are so useful on the surface of moon.... thats gonna be more interesting for future space ships....

may be now Nation's gonna start fighting for that Tunnel Space on moon claiming it as they own that space...
