Mass Rapid Transit
A city of just over 5 million, the island nation of Singapore has limited space to work with but ambitious plans to grow its population. Already teeming with a vibrant public transportation system, the city has partnered with MIT to devise ways to manage its growth.

Arteries
Fearful that it will become overrun with vehicles, the government has damped demand by making them expensive. The price of a BMW 320i sedan, for example, is around $140,000, more than three times its average U.S. sticker price

Pan Island Expressway
The goal of the partnership with MIT, called the SMART (for Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology) is to examine the "future of urban mobility" as well as other growth issues.

Taxi Stand
Among the projects being developed by the SMART center is a computer simulation program that can track, second-to-second, how many taxis were being used and where in the city on a given day.

Lined Up
The taxi simulation program would allows transport providers to increase transport supply in areas that need it most on a "real-time" basis.

Timetable
A commuter looks at the times of bus arrivals at Orchard Road, the city's busiest shopping district.

Swiped
Commuters use EZ-Link cards, a contactless smart card, to pay public transportation fares.

Central Expressway
The Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantry is an electronic toll collection scheme designed to manage traffic flow in congested areas. The charge of passing through a gantry depends on the location and time.

Light Show
The white light shows the short-range communication system between the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantry and the reader inside the vehicles.

Control Room
The city's Intelligent Transport System infrastructure is managed centrally by the Intelligent Transport Systems Center (ITSC). Manned 24/7 by a crew of at least seven, the center ITSC manages traffic flow and incidents on expressways.

Monitoring
The ITSC also operates, maintains and upgrades all the Intelligent Transport Systems and traffic lights island-wide, as well as the major road tunnels.

Information Board
The city hopes aims to profit from its growing expertise in urban mobility by exporting the apps the center develops to traffic-crippled cities like Bangkok, Mumbai and New York.

Elevated Train
"[Singapore] sees an enormous potential market in the future for urban transportation solutions," says Amedeo Odoni, the leader of the MIT-Singapore urban-mobility team and a professor of engineering at the university.
