Whether your iPhone 4 comes in Verizon or AT&T flavor, you're going to have to accept a hefty data plan as part of the deal. Unless, of course, you find a terribly clever way to free your phone from the shackles of a major carrier. Like this one.

What you're watching above is a demonstration of a Verizon iPhone 4 that's been flashed to Cricket, a small carrier that uses the same CDMA network as Verizon. The full instruction list isn't yet available, but that's probably just as well; the process of flashing your phone—making it compatible with a different carrier than it shipped with—requires relatively high-level wizardry, and a wrong move could do permanent damage to your handset. The truly adventurous, though, can sniff around the CDMA Gurus forum on the subject.

For the rest of us, fortunately, flashing a phone is something that third-party Cricket dealers will actually do for you. And when you find one that can, you'll have access to pay-as-you-go plans starting at $35/month for talk and text.

Caveats? Well, freedom's never free. It's still unclear whether you can get data working on your Cricket iPhone as well, or if you're limited to talk and text. You'll have to jailbreak your phone and install a few homebrew apps, which again isn't something you should seriously consider if you're not experienced. And you may not want to trust some random Cricket dealer to know what he's doing with a handset you paid a lot of money for.

But! All that being said, how wonderful to get a glimpse of the iPhone as a commodity phone, instead of atop its premium pedestal.
