Fabio and Rooney on target to knock Gunners out and reach Semis.

Veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was in sparkling form as Manchester United secured a place in The FA Cup sponsored by E.ON Semi-Finals with a deserved 2-0 victory over rivals Arsenal.

Fabio Da Silva and Wayne Rooney got the goals either side of half-time as the Red Devils brushed off back-to-back defeats in the Premier League to set up a last-four date at Wembley.

But it was Van der Sar who took the plaudits with a string of fine saves prompting the Stretford End into chants of "Fergie, sign him up" and "One more year" in reference to his impending retirement at the end of the season.

But defeat was another blow to the beleaguered Gunners, whose dreams of silverware are fading fast with just the title to play for after being dumped out of three competitions in less than a fortnight.

And their misery was compounded when defender Johan Djorou was carried off on a stretcher late on with a suspected dislocated arm to add their escalating casualty list.

Sir Alex Ferguson surprisingly named seven defenders in his starting line-up with the Brazilian Da Silva twins Fabio and Rafael acting as wingers while keeper Manuel Almunia was recalled for Arsenal after Wojciech Szczesny dislocated his finger in the midweek Champions League defeat at Barcelona.

And it gave the visitors the encouragement to push forward early on with Andrey Arshavin jinking past Wes Brown and squeezing in a shot that Van der Sar took comfortably before the Russian shot wide wastefully from 25 yards.

United wasted their first meaningful opportunity when Fabio picked out his brother with a deep cross that Rafael headed high over the bar.

Fabio then showed him the way to do it with a clinical finish in the 28th minute. The twins exchanged passes before Rooney picked out Javier Hernandez, whose header was well saved by Almunia but fell nicely to Fabio and he made no mistake from eight yards out.

Arsenal almost hit back immediately when Robin van Persie peeled off Nemanja Vidic to hit a low cross shot, which Van der Sar did well to fingertip wide and from the resulting corner, the Dutchman headed inches off target.

Van der Sar then made a brilliant double save at the beginning of the second half - first kicking out Laurent Koscielny's deflected cross then getting up quickly to palm away the defender's curling follow-up.

And Arsenal were were made to pay immediately by United, who sprang to the other end of the pitch to double their lead when Rafeal's shot bounced up off Djorou for Rooney to loop a header into the far corner.

Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh both forced decent saves from Van der Sar while at the other end Ryan Giggs failed to get away a shot in the six-yard box less than a minute after coming off the subs' bench.

Chamakh should have pulled a goal back with quarter of an hour to go when Bacary Sagna found him unmarked in the box but the striker's header lacked power and Van der Sar was again able to turn it away.

The veteran then kept out Nasri's stinging 20-yard strike before Almunia, not to be outdone, stretched out a hand to claw away Hernandez's close range effort.

And it's United who move into the last fourand face a trip to Wembley.
