Explosion
On March 14, 2011, for the second time since a devastating earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern Japan on March 11, explosions rocked the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Okuma, about 155 miles (249 km) northeast of Tokyo

Seaside Power Plant
The plant is supposed to be protected from the forces of the ocean by a series of seawalls, which were ineffective in stopping the giant tsunami that followed the quake. The water disabled the diesel generators that are crucial to maintaining power to the reactors' cooling systems.

Inside the Plant
A 2004 photograph shows the plant's reactor unit No. 4, which has so far not suffered an explosion. Though government officials have played down the concerns of a meltdown, engineers are still working to cool the reactors.

Fukushima from the Air
The plant has been operational since 1971, making some of its reactors among the oldest in Japan.

Dangerous Situation
The explosion at the No. 3 reactor, above, injured 11. Meanwhile, officials say the fuel rods in the No. 2 reactor are fully exposed, leading to fears of a partial meltdown. The plant operators have been pumping seawater into the reactor in the hopes of cooling it.

Checking for Radiation
Officials began testing residents who live near the plant for radiation poisoning the day after the quake hit.
