man for the society Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport remains the world's busiest airport, according to a report published by the Airports Council International (ACI). Heathrow has slipped from second to fourth place in the list compared to last year’s figures. The British airport has been overtaken by Beijing's Capital International and Chicago's O'Hare, which come in respectively at second and third place. Beijing's airport has seen traffic grow by 13% over the past year, highlighting the surge of air traffic all over Asia. Meanwhile, Atlanta held on to the top spot thanks to its strong global carrier and low-cost airline. The rankings, which are based on reports from 900 airports around the world, also reveal that passenger traffic increased by 6.3%, while cargo traffic rose by 15.2% in 2010. ACI World Director General Angela Gittens commented: “2010 underscored the resilience of the air transport business and resulted in over five billion annual passengers for the first time ever. 2010 also pronounced the shift and divergence in growth across the regions. “While North America and Europe have struggled to reach pre-crisis passenger volumes, Asia-Pacific, Latin America-Caribbean and Middle East sustained a strong momentum and gained market share through double digit growth.”
