Shanghai: The City
After decades of hibernation, China's most dynamic, most cosmopolitan city assumed its place in the international spotlight this year by hosting Expo 2010, a world's fair that drew millions of visitors to the city. Home to 19 million people, Shanghai is home to offices of 750 foreign multinational companies, a vibrant economy and an iconic skyline with more than 30 buildings reaching higher than 650 feet.

Shanghai: Technology
Among the world-beating moves made by the Chinese is the construction of a network of high-speed rail lines. The new connections, it is hoped, will speed up development and give China a competitive advantage over other economies. The link recently inaugurated between Shanghai and Suzhou/Nanjing boasts one of the world's fastest trains, capable of hitting speeds up to 217 miles per hour.

Mumbai: The City
India's business capital is in the midst of a massive makeover. The state government of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is the capital, wants to raze dozens of slums for redevelopment and new infrastructure as part of its multibillion-dollar plan to turn the city into a world-class financial center by 2015.

Mumbai: Development
A cyclist rides by Dhirubhai Ambani Corporate City on the outskirts of Mumbai. Owned by Mukesh Ambani, ranked the richest man in Asia, and the fourth wealthiest in the world, the complex will spread over 180 acres, and provide 2.2 million square feet of office space for 10,000 workers.

San Diego: The City
In 1985, a nonprofit called Connect sprang up in the Southern California city to link scientists and inventors at top research institutions like UC San Diego and the Salk Institute with investors, advisers and support services. The result is a city that is home to a cluster of life-sciences and technology companies like Qualcomm, Biogen Idec and Gen-Probe.

San Diego: Innovation
A group of students at UC San Diego's Laboratory for Intelligent and Safe Automobiles show off a "smart computer" in the trunk of a Volkswagen Passat. The technology allows the car to operate autonomously.

Munich: The City
The economic centre of southern Germany is home to some of the world's most innovative companies, like Siemens AG (electronics), Munich Re (Re-insurance), MAN AG (truck manufacturer, engineering), and BMW, which opened this exhibition facility near its headquarters in 2007.

Munich: Transportation
The city of 2.6 million people has one of the most comprehensive and punctual public transportation systems in the world, incorporating an underground railway, above, and suburban trains. The extensive system has allowed the city to phase out much car traffic in its center, while preserving the efficient movement of people from the city center to outlying regions. Munich is also a stop on the network of high-speed trains that are beginning to criss-cross Europe and Germany.
