A 26-year-old woman from Southwark, South London, has failed the driving theory test 90 times, Driving Standards Agency (DSA) figures have revealed.

The astonishing failure rate is a UK record and has cost the learner £2,790. She last failed the multiple-choice test in November 2010.

The test, which costs £31 a time, consists of 50 questions, each with four possible answers. Students must answer a minimum of 43 questions correctly to pass.

The list of 1,000 possible questions is available to buy in an officially licensed DSA book, which costs £12.99.

The DSA figures, which were obtained after a freedom of information request, also revealed that a 39-year-old man from the West Midlands failed his driving test 39 times.

He's not the record holder, though. That dubious honour goes to Git Kaur Randhawa from Middlesex, who passed in 1987 on her 48th attempt. She was 49 at the time and had taken more than 330 lessons.

And there is some comfort for the Southwark woman. It's reported that the world record for the number of failed theory tests goes to South Korean Cha Sa-Soon, who failed 949 times before finally getting it right.

At that rate, our record holder would probably be bankrupt before ever getting behind the wheel: it would cost £29,450 to take the test 950 times in the UK - enough to buy a new BMW 3-Series Coupé.
