sons did not leave any offspring to take over the throne since BHEESHMA is not supposed to marry nor he is supposed to take over the throne due to the promise he makes to satyavati's father, so satyavati calls her god son VYASA MAHARSHI  ( i mean she gives birth to a son through a god as a wish like KARNA is for Kunthi) who is a maharshi. Satyavati asks her daughter in laws (AMBA & AMBALIKA) both to have s e x with him but as one approaches him she fears and closes her eyes, so thats how DHIRTHARASHTRA (eldest son) was born without eyes And even though the second daughter in law was good but for some reason PANDU RAJU (younger son)was supposed to be stricken with a bad omen where if he does s e x with his wife, he will die.

but before all this pandu raju was made king since he is a complete man without any health problems, but the eldest son always worried about his offspring who are supposed to be the kings when they grow up but since he is not the king he worries a lot. But due to Pandu's bad omen,he gave the throne to his elder brother.

And the rest is history ...why kaurauvas and pandavas fight for their land and throne.
