CHENNAI: Defence forces have the expertise to carry out rescue operations to evacuate Indians stranded in the crisis-hit Japan, said Vice Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Arvinder Singh Lamba.
Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of the passing out parade at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) here on Saturday, he said the decision to employ this expertise during disasters rested on the government.
On the shortage of officers in the Indian Army, Lamba said more would be inducted with the second OTA coming up at Gaya. He said 270 students could be inducted through this academy soon.
A total of 219 cadets, including 61 women, joined the Indian Army on Saturday on completion of training at the OTA in St Thomas Mount.
