[/quote]Some of us (Nonresident Aliens) are submitting 1040 or 1040A or 1040EZ tax return forms just to get the $1000 tuition money back.  What we don't realize is that the IRS can come back and audit their tax return and ask them to not only pay back the money but they will add penalties and interest for incorrect tax filing.  In addition, tax returns are often required by immigration officials for review when changing your status or applying for a green card, etc.  It is not a chance I would want to take!

Now, it can be that some of our international students are Resident Aliens.  Generally, F-1 students receive five lifetime years in the U.S. as a Resident Alien.  For example if you entered the U.S. in 2008.  Your five years as a Nonresident Alien are 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012.  In 2013, you can file your tax return just like a U.S. Citizen and you will be completing a 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ tax return instead of your Nonresident tax return (1040NR or 1040NR-EZ), and you will be able to take tuition deductions/credits on your tax return.  sHa_high5ing sHa_high5ing
