MELBOURNE MEN SWEPT TO THEIR DEATHS BY LARGE WAVE

ocals on Kangaroo Island say visitors should be more safety conscious following the deaths of two Melbourne men who drowned after being struck by a monster wave.

The 25 and 29-year-old, both international students based in Melbourne, were washed off the rocks as they posed for a photograph at the popular tourist spot in South Australia.

The rest of their group, none of whom could swim, were powerless to help them as a second wave swept them further into the rough sea.

Five men and a woman from Melbourne and an Adelaide man, all believed to be Indian, had walked on to the rocks at Point Ellen, the western headland of Vivonne Bay, about 60km from Kingscote, shortly after 4pm yesterday.

They said they had been admiring the view when tragedy struck.

The two men had their backs to the ocean and were about to have their photograph taken when a large wave hit the rocks.

The other members of the group were forced to jump to safety. When they turned back, both the men had been swept out to sea - neither could swim.

Locals and regular visitors to the island are saddened, but not surprised by the tragedy, insisting that tourists have to be better educated about the dangers.

Local man Eugene told 7NEWS: "I think it's people that don't know the area and when you are down on the rocks, you're taking a chance with a swell.

"You should never turn back with rough weather round here because it can be treacherous. There should be signs around here warning people."

Nearby holiday makers came to their aid and managed to bring one man back to shore, but their efforts were in vain.

A doctor and a woman spent several minutes performing CPR on one of the men, but they were unable to revive him.

The other man's body was recovered shortly after. Both have been taken to Kingscote.

One was believed to be an engineering student.

Constable Craig Oates, from Kangaroo Island police, said: "The men had gone on to the rocks to take a photo. A large wave swept two of them into the water."
