The Manmohan Singh Government has accelerated its efforts to persuade Yoga guru Baba Ramdev to call off his proposed hunger strike against corruption from June 4. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday appealed to the Yoga guru, who commands a lot of following among people across the country, to call off his strike, while Home Minister P Chidambaram told newspersons here that the Finance Minister and officials in his ministry were in touch with Ramdev to address his concerns. Singh wrote a letter to the Yoga guru urging him to cancel his protest.

The Government was also toying with the idea of sending its most-effective troubleshooter, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to meet Baba Ramdev as a last resort to convince him about steps being taken to combat corruption and, in particular, to track down black money stashed away in foreign banks.

The Government had last week dispatched Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath and CBDT chairman Sudhir Chandra to meet Baba Ramdev and apprise him of the measures taken by the Centre to reverse the flow of black money. Baba Ramdev, however, has spurned the overtures so far and said he would go ahead with his hunger strike against corruption from Saturday. "My hunger strike will go ahead. There is no question of calling off the protest plan till my demands are met and till talks reach a satisfactory conclusion," the Yoga guru told a news channel, from his yoga camp in Madhya Pradesh.
