The ajab prem ki ghazab kahani that rocked this western Uttar Pradesh town last fortnight has taken a sad twist. Remember the young husband who had asked his bride to tie him a rakhi so that she could reunite with her lover! Now it turns out that the girl's lover — actually her first husband, since the two had allegedly earlier got married in a secret ceremony — has dumped her and is avoiding contact with her.

On Sunday, the district administration called Aarti (the girl) and her husband (Nitesh) to the police counselling centre. The couple turned down the suggestion to live together saying they had already accepted each other as brother and sister. When the counsellors tried to contact the lover (Vinit), he refused to meet them saying there was a threat to his life.

"Vinit has backed out of accepting Aarti for some reason. On persuasion from her parents, Aarti has agreed to go back to them to them following a written agreement at the police counseling centre," said Meerut superintendent of police (city), Prabal Pratap Singh. Asked if Aarti's family would not be unkind to her, Singh said, "Her father knows that he could face police action if he mistreats her."

Nitesh said, " I have no regrets for my decision. Aarti was already married. Now, she is like my own sister. I could hardly have been happy if she was not. Let us see if we can somehow get Aarti and Vinit together."

The bizarre wedding created newspaper headlines a fortnight ago. The strangest part was that Nitesh, a 21-year-old supervisor in an IT company, was earlier engaged to marry Aarti's elder sister. But when she eloped with a trainee police sub-inspector before the marriage, her father, asked Nitesh to marry her younger sister Aarti. The wedding took place on May 6. Aarti's father is employed as a sub-inspector with Provincial Armed Constabulary, Rudrapur.
