Deletedid1 Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Parents of Kargil war martyr Captain Vikram Batra on Tuesday lamented that it is unfortunate that very few youth are interested in joining the armed forces.Vikram’s father Girdharilal Batra and his mother Kamal Kanta Batra were speaking at the Vijay Diwas celebrations organised by Apex Careers at the Mahatma Phule Museum on Ghole Road.Retired Colonel of Indian Army Lalit Rai was the chief guest. The duo was honoured by Apex Careers.“Young people are keen to lead a luxurious life. The present generation has a very materialistic view of life. They fail to understand the pride attached in fighting for the country,’’ said Girdharilal, who lost Vikram when he was just 24.The event was organised to pay tribute to the heroism and triumph of Vikram Batra from Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) who died in the Kargil battle and was awarded the prestigious Paramveer Chakra.According to Vikram’s parents, the life of an army officer is tough with many hardships and this refrains most youth from joining the armed forces. The felicitation event turned out to be an emotional journey for Batra. “From childhood, Vikram showed traits of a strong character. We knew that he is born to achieve something great, but never did we dream that the greatness would come in this manner,’’ the emotional parents said.Vikram’s mother said her son would have joined the merchant navy.“His uniform was stitched and his tickets were booked as well, but his love for the nation and the passion for the Indian Army made him join the forces,’’ she said, adding that she is proud that her son served the nation on the borders.Col (retd) Rai said joining the Army is not a profession and it is entering a dignified life.“I have served as a soldierin the past and at present, I am the head honcho of a corporate firm. But given a choice, I would live a life on the borders than the luxurious one I live at present,’’ he said. He is director of a pharma company.
