Indian Navy denies permission for flying from INS Vikrant

The Indian Navy has denied permission for flying from the INS Vikrant, which is set to be converted into a museum. This may now defer the interest shown by two bidders for the ship’s conversion.

In a meeting chaired by chief secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad on Thursday at Mantralaya, naval officers denied permission for flying from the ship.

Apart from the security reasons —the vulnerability of the Mumbai coast — the navy also cited a technical hitch as the INS Shikhra, the defence heliport is barely a kilometre away from the Vikrant. Though officials tried to push for the permission, naval officers did not budge.

Ackruti and Amby Valley of Sahara are two bidders that responded to the bids invited by the state government. The final bidder will get nearly 2 lakh sq ft of space for commercial exploitation. The museum is expected to be set up on 50,000 sq ft of space.

Refusal from the Navy for flying from the carrier, which was decommissioned in 1997, may defer the interest of the bidders as it would have been a vital source of income for the company implementing the project on Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis. The Rs500 crore project will be supported by the state and central government with viability gap funding.
