Patriotism is a 'cultivated' feeling like any other feeling. One is interested in his/her own survival. If somebody tries to steal my living, I will confront it purely to protect my survival as per my strength. No name can be given to this instinct. Feeling of patriotism is unreal as the underlying intention is just  'one's survival'. Therefore the question of whether it is necessary or not is invalid.

And one doing any good to the society is unreal. One is doing good to oneself. Always.
