I know d literal difference. Everything starts from Bias/Love/PROTECTIVE NATURE.  As time goes by, Rivalry and jealous feelings develop between two groups . Each group defines its quest for supremacy/conquest as its fight for pride and identity. In this process a hatred on the other group is automatically created which equals CHauvnism.

In essence, i would define Patriotism as an initial phase of chauvnism. I dont follow the webster/dictionary.com as they are not as dynamic as the mindsets and opinions of society.

Also , an inference to CASTE FEELING here : FIrst love for ones caste starts, later it grows into rivalries between different castes and automatically, people tend to support their own groups . Some neutral people who do not want fights try to stay away from it. Same applies to nations as well, if they cant fight (most cases )..dont want to fight (some cases) they stay away from it and support :PEACE and the white pigeon.

I feel like you are just generalizing your opinion.... i ve seen lot of people... Hailing  from an army family I ve seen officers on both side of the border who are very friendly....... during peace time.. they too say that they dont want fight wars for no reason.......

they have no hatred at persona level...... but they feel proud for defending their respective countries.... apride I have never seen i any man's eyes

Pride doesnt need to co exist with hatred towards the opposite person or group

1) So in that case....you shud respect and love both India and America.....When a discussion abt the life of NRIs in US or any other foreign country starts....ppl keep on boasting abt India and its greatness.......and start abusing America and its policies, life style,etc...so when you feel proud abt being a citizen of your country.....doesn't the other country deserve equal respect from you?

and as ranga said.....love/bias towards "our" caste/region/country leads to jealousy, rivalry......which in turn leads to hatred, fight for supremacy
