Sakala Janula Samme, A Flop In Hyderabad

The “Sakala Janula Samme” (mass indefinite strike) announced by the Telangana Joint Action Committee with effect from Tuesday had a little impact in Hyderabad.

According to official reports, only 20-24 per cent of employees stayed away from their work, mostly in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and Hyderabad Metro Water Supply Board.

In Secretariat, 86 per cent of the employees attended the duty on Tuesday; which is a normal figure on any given day. As such, the work was not affected much.

Even the Electricity employees attended their duties religiously.

Thought the police made elaborate bandobust, there were not many disturbances from Telangana employees in the form of rasta rokos or dharnas, except in a few places.

TJAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram admitted that there were some problems with regard to Hyderabad.

“We will rectify these problems and see that more employees join the strike,” he said.

However, in other parts of Telangana, the strike was near total.

The biggest impact was on the Singareni Collieries, one of the largest coal producers in the country. Nearly one lakh employees, affiliated to 14 different unions, boycotted the work and locked up the coal mines in 50 places, including 36 underground and 14 open cast mines, all along the coal belt in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam districts.

As part of the strike, government teachers, employees of state-owned Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation and other public sector undertakings also plan to join the strike from September 16.
