Tirupati: The TTD board chief, Mr Kanumuri Bapiraju, who complimented the doctors of TTD-run BIRRD (Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled) hospital for their commendable services, asked them to serve the patients with utmost patience as they come to the hospital with plenty of hope after travelling thousands of kilometres.

The TTD chairman launched the free Joint Replacement Surgery programme in BIRRD in Tirupati on Thursday. “BIRRD was set up in the year 1984 as a 50-bed hospital. Today it has raised the capacity of 250 beds, with an occupancy rate of over 120%.

With these figures we can imagine how the medical services in BIRRD became popular across the country as most of the patients with joint dislocations and ailments come from Maharastra, Bihar, Rajastan, etc," Mr Bapiraju remarked.

The Chairman said that providing qualitative treatment to poor patients free of cost is the motto of BIRRD. Tirupati MP Dr Chinta Mohan stated that BIRRD is a boon to the poor people as majority of the patients goes back to their destinations to start a new life.

Former Kavali MLA Magunta Parvathamma hailed BIRRD as a place of rebirth and described the doctors as "Apara Brahmas". TTD EO LV Subramanyam recalled the outstanding services of late Dr Vyaghreshwarudu, the founder of BIRRD hospital and called up on the staff to follow in his footsteps. He said, "TTD has been granting funds to BIRRD hospital even from Pranadana Trust.

We will not compromise on standards of medication and we will upgrade the hospital in the future", he added. Earlier, Dr Jagadish, Director of BIRRD, explained to the TTD board chief, EO and MP the various interesting knee joint or replacement cases of rare nature, the artificial equipment making area etc., during their visit.

SV Medical College Principal Dr Vasudeva Reddy, Vice-Principal Dr Subhadhra Devi, doctors of BIRRD and staff members were also present.
