Namaste Telangana Owner Gets Polavaram Tender

Hyderabad, Oct 20: Polavaram project is a very emotional issue for the people of Telangana. The TRS has been repeatedly stating that Telangana would turn into a desert if the project becomes a reality. It has threatened that it would never allow that project to materialize. It is also a fact that several tribal villages would vanish because of the project. In that situation it has shocked that the owner of ‘Namaste Telangana’ who is very close to the TRS chief KCR and a strong protagonist of separate state, got the Rs.4,717 crore tender of Polavaram, for his Southern Engineering Works (SEW).

While it is shocking that such a strong protagonist of Telangana had filed tender papers in the first place and got it eventually, the keenness the government had shown in giving the tender to him is more astonishing. It may be noted that the Committee of Engineers and Experts had named only three companies eligible for the tender and SEW was not one of the three. However, SEW, the fourth company owned by C L Rajam, owner of the Namaste Telangana newspaper and a close associate of KCR was included as the fourth eligible company amid high drama and through the intervention of the Chief Minister’s office. The entire situation changed on Wednesday, in favour of the Namaste Telangana owner. SEW Patel company was made eligible hastily and when the tenders opened on Wednesday night, it happened that SEW has quoted 12.61 percent less than the estimates and was accorded the tender, despite the fact that a more experienced and eligible Soma CGGC company quoted 12.08 percent less. The government has justified its decision by stating that it saved Rs. 650 crores by giving the tender for SEW. One more glaring aspect is that while the tenderer should have done government works to the tune of Rs. 500 crores, the government has accepted a certificate given by another company to SEW for making it eligible.

Now one has to construe that even strong champions of Telangana can deprive the people of the region of the direst requisite like water, if they can make money by doing so. We have to consider what the TDP senior leader and a strong United AP protagonist Kodela Siva Prasada Rao said. “You fight for Telangana. You ask the employees to go on strike and make their children starve. You ask the poor people of Telangana not to send your children to schools. But you (Telangana legislators) take salaries. You have business partnerships with Andhra people. You send your children to schools in Andhra so that they will not lose their education”.

There have been allegations that the children of several TRS leaders including K T Rama Rao and Harish Rao have been sending their children to corporate schools and they had not lost a single day due to the Sakala Janula Samme. There were demands that the TRS should come forward with a white paper on where their leaders’ children are studying. But so far there was no answer for this question.
