AHMEDABAD: After six long years the Vaidya family will celebrate Diwali with real happiness. On Thursday, Allaik Vaidya (58) was discharged from Apollo Hospital after a successful liver transplant. His son Chirag, 32, gave his father a special gift when he opted to donate a good 70 per cent of his liver to be transplanted.
Chirag said that his father has been suffering from liver trouble for the past six years and was advised to go in for a transplant. "Right from the beginning I decided that I will give this gift to the man who gave me life, struggled hard to bring me up and educate me. It helped that my wife Dhruti completely supported me in this. I am glad that he is healthy now and we will get to celebrate Diwali together. My seven year old son is waiting for us to return home to Navsari," an emotional Chirag said.
Chirag works as an operations manager in a life insurance company and re-joined work two days ago after the rest period prescribed by doctors. Significantly, almost all of the part of his liver which he donated has regenerated in a month's time.
"The Liver regenerates at a fast rate. Despite the fact that Chirag donated a good 70 per cent of his organ, all of it has regenerated. Only the shape is different", said chief liver transplantsurgeon Dr Chirag Desai.
Dr Desai said that Allaik suffered cryptogenic liver cirrhosis where fat deposits in his organ led to its failure. This happens to due to excessive fat deposition in the body, diabetes, high blood pressure and other factors contributing to Syndrome-X. He said that since Chirag too had fatty liver, he was first asked to lose five or six kilos so the chances of a successful liver transplant increased.
Dr Desai said liver transplants have become an established treatment for liver failure. Vani Khiria from Ahmedabad was one of the youngest patients to undergo a successful liver transplant at Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. "Vani was a born with a congenital birth defect which led to liver failure. Her grandmother donated a portion of her liver. She is two and half years old now and is growing normally. She is doing all the things a kid of her age does", said Vani's father Vinay Khiria.
