[b]Dhanteras[/b] (Hindi: धनतेरस ,Marathi : Dhantrayodashi) is the first day of the five-day [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali"]Diwali[/url] [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival"]Festival[/url] as celebrated in parts of north India. The festival, also known as [i]"Dhantrayodashi"[/i] or [i]"Dhanvantari Triodasi"[/i], falls on the auspicious thirteenth [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_day"]lunar day[/url] of [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishna_paksha"]Krishna paksha[/url] (dark fortnight) in the [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_calendar"]Hindu calendar[/url] month of [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kartik"]Kartik[/url] (October/November).
The [i]Dhan[/i] in Dhanteras means [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wealth"]wealth[/url]. On Dhanteras, the "Owl" form of [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goddess"]Goddess[/url] [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakshmi"]Laxmi[/url] is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. Dhanteras holds special significance for the business community due to the customary purchases of precious metals on this day .
To mark the auspicious day, houses and business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with traditional [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motif_(visual_arts)"]motifs[/url] of [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rangoli"]Rangoli[/url] designs to welcome the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Footprint"]footprints[/url] are drawn with rice [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flour"]flour[/url] and [url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermilion"]vermilion[/url] powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the night.
