ROUDRAM Posted October 25, 2011 Report Posted October 25, 2011 Even as the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), spearheading the agitation against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, are set to intensify their stir from Tuesday, they reiterated on Monday that they will not accept or recognise the experts committee appointed by the union government to allay their fears on the N-plant. “We will not enter into any kind of dialogue with this committee which has only members toeing the government’s line. Let them bring in members of the civil society and anti-nuclear activist groups in the committee so that there will be a meaningful discussion,”PMANE’s Pushparayan said. “There is no point in discussing the safety aspects of the nuclear power plant with these members who are all proponents of nuclear energy,” said Pushparayan. Both Pushparayan and SP Udayakumar said they would not hold any discussions with APJ Abdul Kalam, former president who has volunteered to talk with the leaders of the agitation to resolve the issue. “Kalam is another spokesman of the nuclear energy lobby and he will not be able to convince us,” said Pushparayan. The Centre last week had appointed a committee of experts including AE Muthunayagam (former ISRO scientist), MR Iyer (former BARC scientist) and Prof Harsh Gupta, seismologist and former secretary to the union government’s ministry of earth sciences, to talk to the agitators. Meanwhile, the agitators are all set to intensify their struggle from Tuesday in view of the police escorting scientists, engineers and technicians to the site. “Our volunteers will lay siege to the project from Tuesday morning to completely paralyse the activities in the plant,” said Pushparayan. Over 200 women activists led by elected members of the local bodies told the Kudankulam Police that they would block all entries to the KNPP from Tuesday if the police continue providing escort to the NPCIL staff.
