Jambhalheart Posted October 26, 2011 Report Posted October 26, 2011 NARASANNAPET (Srikakulam): People ran helter-skelter as chaos prevailed on the National Highway-5 at Kambakai village junction, 5 km from here, after a uranium-laden container vehicle from [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Jharkhand"]Jharkhand[/url] rammed a stationary truck on Monday. The front portion of the container was damaged and the vehicle turned on one side. Realising that the container was carrying uranium, people of the surrounding areas thought that there was a leakage of the highly radioactive material and became panicky. Police rushed to the spot and stopped vehicular traffic as a precaution. Narasannapet inspector K Murthy said alternative arrangements were being made to shift the container to another vehicle, which would be requisitioned from Icchapuram, 100 km from the accident spot. He said they had checked the container and found no leakage. The container was heading towards Hyderabad carrying uranium to [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/DRDO"]DRDO[/url], sources said.However, no one was injured in the mishap. Since the vehicle was carrying uranium, [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/CISF"]CISF[/url] personnel in two vehicles were escorting it. Immediately after the accident, the [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/NHAI"]NHAI[/url] authorities and local police blocked traffic on the road up to 1 km . Killi Appala Naidu of [url="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Narsannapet"]Narsannapet[/url] recalled that a similar incident took place four years ago near the town. A A uranium-laden vehicle overturned and salvage operations were taken up after two days.
