Tamil cinema has in the form of two stalwarts Kamal Hasan and Rajnikanth had created a good enough market for them in Telugu. While earlier from mid 80’s to mid 90’s it was dominated by Kamal Hasan, later Rajnikanth with Basha created a big market for him with Robo taking him to the pinnacle. Leaving these two stalwarts aside none of the other actors managed to create a market for themselves in Telugu even if they had few successes here and there like Ajith had with Prema Lekha and Vaali, Prabhu Deva post Premikudu, Abbas post Prema Desham. They all had their chances in the 90’s but could not capitalize on their initial success.
On a closer look though one gets an entire different picture. Was it the actors or was it the directors that worked for those actors. Shankar, K.S.Ravi Kumar, Kathir, Suresh Krishna, S.J.Suryah were the directors for those films and most of those successful films had those directors in common even if the actors changed. And among those directors it has been Shankar who almost created a new hero with each of his new release in Telugu or took the existing stars to their threshold. Arjun, Prabhu Deva, and Prashanth he delivered a hit with all of them. The actors though failed to match those successes again with their other films.,...........
